Twenty of us gathered in John and
Anthea's lovely sitting room to see three short cine films made by Merie and
Jim Keeble in the seventies. The first was a fascinating film of the
Queen's visit to Maldon. Incredible to see the lack of security at that time
and to remember the fashions. Everyone wore hats! The Queen's visit was
celebrated in the park with a superb gala, the horses were particularly
splendid and the acrobatics were amazing. Maldon certainly knew how to
celebrate then. Everyone seemed to be there enjoying themselves.
The second film was of a visit to a Farm Open day in the
seventies. To see the really old fashioned ways of farming and the wonderful
tractors, ploughs etc was so very interesting. The Suffolk Punch horses pulling
the carts were a magnificent sight.
Then a film about bee-keeping and a glimpse of Merie extracting
the honey. Bees are fascinating creatures and it was a film which showed them
to perfection.
Jim and Re were a
brilliant soundtrack, explaining and talking us through the three films. Merie
described how the films were edited at the time, a very time consuming and
fiddly business. The thanks we gave them were heartfelt.
Social time, coffee and tea, and then the meeting ended with the
Grace. A really brilliant evening was had by all.
If you are interesting in joining us please telephone Merie on
01621 856354. or Elaine Brown on 853238. You will be warmly welcomed at any of
our meetings.

We met in the URC hall on October
13th, when Viv welcomed us and a few new faces. We remembered those who could
not be with us. It was good to see Barbara after her recent surgery and we
thought of Betty and John.
For the December meeting it has been decided to spend our time
together remembering Christmases of the past. Do give this some thought.
Our speakers were Ralph and Trish who are members of a charity
called Samaritan’s Purse and are involved in collecting and delivering
shoeboxes which have been filled with goodies for children aged 2 to14 years,
who live in orphanages and other poor circumstances in the poorer countries of
the world. It all started in 1990 and has grown enormously in the number of
boxes to be distributed. They are collected and stored in large warehouses
after being checked and sorted into girls’ or boys’ and then sealed. Trish went
to Belarus in 2007 and saw for herself the absolute joy and delightful response
from the children. She visited private homes, hospitals, churches and schools
whilst she was there and saw how much the children enjoyed the contents of
their very own box. They try to visit a different orphanage each year. We were
able to witness the excitement of the children when Trish showed us a short
video of her visit last year.
After refreshments, Stephanie led the devotion and we said the
Grace together after an afternoon that was very thought provoking.
Mr Dominic Atkins is coming to the November meeting and he will
be telling us about Radio Essex.

RAMBLING GROUP
(Ten to Ten)
The venue for our October Walk was
Burnham on Crouch
We set off from the car park over looking the yacht marina and
made our way across the green to the river wall. Passing various crafts,
house-boats, cafes, a chandlery, local inns and at least three yacht clubs, we
soon left the town behind.
The sun shone and the river sparkled.
The landscape was so beautiful and peaceful. About 2 miles out we left the wall
and followed a rough path, at right angles to the wall, between fields. Then turning
back towards the town we joined a track passing a large open shed housing a
very smart, small aeroplane and eventually came back to civilization. Walking
between houses we arrived on the High Street adjacent to the Clock Tower.
From there we made our way back along the river wall to our cars
and ate our picnic lunches sitting out on the green. Such amazing weather for
mid-October.
Our next walk will be on 8th November at Tollesbury. We’ll meet
as usual outside the Tai-Chi Hall on London Road by 9:50 am. If you like to
walk why not join us? You will be very welcome. Bring a picnic or buy something
at one of the local Tollesbury pubs.
